Friday, October 16, 2015 - Have a relaxing weekend!

Highlights:
- We had a Grapheme Quiz today of the 14 double-graphemes.  These are tough graphemes for Grade 1.  Continue to practice them daily, but don’t expect your child to have mastered them completely.  We are only introducing and exposing these graphemes right now, and we’ll be working on them for the whole year.  So please don’t be concerned that your child hasn’t grasped them yet.  At this point in the beginning of Grade 1, your child should be most confident with the single graphemes (letters a-p, qu, r-z and their sounds)—these are the ones they should have mastered.
- We did today’s morning math word problem: “Sarah had 9 candies.  She gave 5 candies to Paul.  How many candies does she have left?”
- During “Read to Self” in Daily 5, we read our book, Poetry book, high-frequency word flashcards, and/or our previous writing in our Journal Writing notebooks

-- Ms. Mui’s class: We read new poems in our Poetry books altogether in chorus.  We did “Read to Self”.  In Science, we read a book called Mouse Paint, by Ellen Stoll Walsh.  Then we showed our understanding of which primary colours (red, yellow, blue) would mix together to make which secondary colours (orange, green, purple) using paint.  In Math, we made ABBC patterns (have your child show you what kind of ABBC pattern s/he made today).

-- Mrs. Daniels’ class: In Daily 5, we rotated into all the sections of Daily 5: “Read to Self”, “Read to others”, “Work on Writing”, “Word Work”, and “Listen to Reading”.  We also did math activities (ask your child what math activities s/he did today).

Important Information:

Coat Drive Challenge:
Please participate in the coat drive to help keep Calgary’s less fortunate warm this winter.  Please donate any clean, new, or gently used coats.  All coats can be brought to your child’s classroom teacher or the front office.  Coats are being collected until Monday, Oct. 26.

Homework:
-No homework!

(Grapheme sounds/spelling rules are on the youtube Grapheme Video at the right-hand sidebar of this blog)
-Review the double graphemes: er, ir, ur, wor, ear, sh, ee, th, ay, ai, ow, ou, aw, au

-Review the learning of the “er”, “ir”, “ur”, “wor”, “ear” grapheme sounds by playing this song on youtube to remember the sounds to particular words: “Her first nurse works early”.  Please play this song at home, to help your child remember the grapheme spellings as well:

-Review the first single graphemes daily, using the youtube Grapheme Video posted at the right-hand sidebar of this blog

-Home-Reading – Please have your child read around 15 minutes every night.  If we run out of other titles of the Level A white paper books your child is currently reading for home-reading, please log your child onto his/her kidsa-z.com reading account to find other titles in Level A that he/she hasn’t read yet.  Then write down the title of that book onto your child’s “Reading Log”.  Your child will read 1 book a night.

-Kidsa-z.com Reading – Besides reading the at-home white readers that are going home every day, you may also log on to “Raz-Kids”, using the kidsa-z.com website.  The login information is taped on your child’s purple folder.  The password is the picture cue.
Mrs. Daniel’s class - the account information is still under her maiden name: “sbeechey”.
Ms. Mui’s class – the account is under her username: “grmui”

Ask me about:
-How I solved the morning math problem by showing you pictures/numbers to show my work
-What are the primary colours (red, yellow, blue)
-What two primary colours mix together to make secondary colours? (red + yellow, yellow + blue, blue + red)
-What are the secondary colors? (orange, green, purple)
