Important Information:

Word Study – Literacy Map:
We finished learning the 26 single graphemes last week and did a Grapheme Review quiz last Friday.  Today we have started to learn about the Double Graphemes.  A letter about the learning of the double graphemes and a Flashcard set went home with your child today.  Please cut up the double grapheme boxes (just like you did for the single grapheme flashcard set in early September), and use the flashcard set every day to practice and review the grapheme sounds with your child.

Continue to also use the Flashcard set that your child brought home in early September, of the single graphemes from a-z, by reviewing the sounds every day.

Class Photos are on Thursday, October 8.  Dress nicely for class picture day!

Scholastic book orders for both Ms. Mui and Mrs. Daniels are due on Friday, October 9.  You can pay by cheque enclosed in an envelope with the Scholastic order form, made payable to “Scholastic Canada”.  Or you can now pay online with your credit card (please bring in the paper order form, with your Payment reference # written on it for the teacher).

You can vote for the new school’s name!  From now until October 13.  Visit our school website for details: http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b397/

Highlights
- We did our morning math problem: “Draw 7 leaves.  Color the first red and the sixth blue.”
- We got a double-grapheme lesson of “er” and “ir” from our Literacy Learning leader, Mr. Dalderis.

er: ‘er’ the ‘er’ of her
ir: ‘ir’ the ‘er’ of first

-- Ms. Mui’s class: We did 16 minutes of “Read to Self” in Daily 5!  In our journal books today, we wrote about our favourite food.  In Math, we did a patterning activity by drawing an AB and ABC pattern using school supplies.  For the Social Studies “Getting to know you” activity, we interviewed Jaya (ask your child what Jaya likes, what language she speaks, how many people are in her family, and what some of her favourite things are).

-- Mrs. Daniels’ class: We did 11 minutes of “Read to Self” in Daily 5!  We finished up our “My Rainbow Book of Colours” booklet today.  In Science, we made predictions and observations about mixing primary colours to make secondary colours.  For the Social Studies “Getting to know you” activity, we interviewed Leah (ask your child what Leah likes, what language she speaks, how many people are in her family, or what some of her favourite things are).

Needed from Home:
**Old coloured magazines/flyers. (We will be using these to find different colours for our Science colour unit.)

We are still collecting water bottle lids!  We are in need of MANY water bottle lids, so that we can print letters on the top of the lids, and students can be able to make words out of them and play word work games soon.  Please send in any that you may have.  Thank you!

Homework:
-Complete the homework for today’s double graphemes “er” and “ir”.
Say aloud these phrases while you are printing the double graphemes:
er: ‘er’ the ‘er’ of her

ir: ‘ir’ the ‘er’ of first

(Print 5 times of each letter—1 line each).  Start using the double grapheme Flashcard set your child brought home today, by cutting up the boxes of double graphemes and practicing the learnt graphemes with your child daily.

This week, for the learning of the “er”, “ir”, “ur”, “wor”, “ear” grapheme sounds, we will be playing this song on youtube to remember the sounds to particular words: “Her first nurse works early”.  Please play this song at home, to help your child remember the grapheme spellings as well:

-Review the first single graphemes daily, using the single grapheme Flashcard set (letters a-z for you to cut up and practice with your child) your child brought home in early September (also use the youtube Grapheme video, posted at the side of our blog, made by our Literacy Learning Leader, Mr. Dalderis.)

-Home-Reading – Please have your child read around 15 minutes every night.  (Do a picture walk with your child first by just looking at the pictures beginning with the title page to the end of the book, next read the book aloud to them 1 to 2 times, then have then read together with you 1 to 2 times, and afterwards have them try reading on their own independently 1 to 2 times.  Make sure when you and your child are reading the words, s/he and you must use your pointer fingers (index finger) to read underneath the words.)

-Kidsa-z.com Reading – Besides reading the at-home white readers that are going home every day, you may also log on to “Raz-Kids”, using the kidsa-z.com website.  The login information is taped on your child’s purple folder.  The password is the picture cue.
Mrs. Daniel’s class - the account information is still under her maiden name: “sbeechey”.
Ms. Mui’s class – the account is under her username: “grmui”

Ask me about:
-the sounds of the double graphemes: “er” and ir”

er: ‘er’ the ‘er’ of her
ir: ‘ir’ the ‘er’ of first
-to show you how I did our morning math problem: “Draw 7 leaves.  Color the first red and the sixth blue.”
-the colours of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple

-Walk to School!
Last spring we invited all families attending PHS to join with their friends and neighbours to walk to school every Wednesday and Friday mornings.  Let's continue to make this simple change that results in big benefits!  We encourage you to explore the residential areas around the school for parking spaces that are more convenient while being mindful about parking in front of private driveways.  Parking just two or three blocks away from the school will reduce frustration and increase everyone’s safety!  You may enter your child in a draw if they walk to school on these day.  See the school website for details.
-Reading:
To support children in becoming knowledgeable readers, the most important thing parents can do is to read aloud to their children and talk about what has been read.  This nightly process supports children in developing oral language skills (the ability to talk in a fluid and understandable manner), comprehension (understanding what has been read), and sparks enthusiasm toward the act of reading.  We created this downloadable document to support parents in identifying the expectations for readers during their years at PHS:
