Highlights
-Today we learned how to print letters y
and z and learned the grapheme sounds of “y” (4 sounds) and “z” (2
sounds).
-We did our morning math problem: “Jean
and Michael want to share the sandwich.
Draw a picture of a sandwich and show the halves.”
-We had gym in the afternoon, where we
built towers out of foam blocks to protect our beanie stuffed toys. Then we practiced our throwing skills by
throwing the bean bag at the tower.
--Ms.
Mui’s class: Since the virtue of
“Friendship” came to an end yesterday (October is the virtue of “Forgiveness”),
we did a Friendship activity to meet our friends. We had music this afternoon, where we played
on the xylophones, up and down the scale, using mallots. For the Social Studies “Getting to know you”
activity, we interviewed Zoe.
--Mrs.
Daniels’ class: We did a colour
wheel activity, where we learned what the three primary colours are (red, blue,
yellow), and if we mix two primary colours together, we will make secondary
colours (orange, green, purple). We did
ten minutes of Read to Self. For the
Social Studies “Getting to know you” activity, we interviewed Sophie.
Homework
-Complete the homework for today’s
graphemes “y” and “z”. (print 5 times of each letter—1 line each).
* Students must remember to say the
sounds out loud as they print each letter grapheme (that way, they are
associating the sounds to the letter as they are practicing to print it on
paper).
-Tomorrow is the
Grapheme Quiz of the 26 grapheme letters/sounds that students have learned
from early September to today. Practice
reviewing the sounds and the letters with your child tonight, so that they will
be prepared for tomorrow’s grapheme review of the 26 graphemes.
-- Parents, practice
and review the sounds daily with your child at home: Say the sounds of letters
a, c, d, f, g, o, s, qu (u always comes after the q, to make the “qu” sound),
b, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, p, r, t, u, v, w, x, y, z. And with each of the sounds you are saying
aloud, your child will print the lowercase letter on paper.
-Reading – Please have
your child read around 15 min every night.
This can include the at-home white readers that are going home everyday. You may also log on to “Raz-Kids”, using the
kidsa-z.com website. The login
information is taped to your child’s purple folder. The password is the picture cue. (Mrs.
Daniel’s class - the account information is still in my maiden name: “sbeechey”. Ms. Mui’s class – the account is under my
username: “grmui”
Ask me about
-What are the sounds of letter y? What are the sounds of letter z?
-Let me show you one of the ways to solve our
morning math problem we did this morning (draw it on paper): “Jean and Michael want to share the
sandwich. Draw a picture of a sandwich
and show the halves.”
-the sounds of letter

-Walk to School!
Last spring we invited all families attending
PHS to join with their friends and neighbours to walk to school every Wednesday
and Friday mornings. Let's continue to
make this simple change that results in big benefits! We encourage you to explore the residential areas
around the school for parking spaces that are more convenient while being
mindful about parking in front of private driveways. Parking just two or three blocks away from
the school will reduce frustration and increase everyone’s safety! You may enter your child in a draw if they
walk to school on these day. See the
school website for details.
-Reading:
To support children in becoming knowledgeable
readers, the most important thing parents can do is to read aloud to their
children and talk about what has been read.
This nightly process supports children in developing oral language
skills (the ability to talk in a fluid and understandable manner),
comprehension (understanding what has been read), and sparks enthusiasm toward
the act of reading. We created this
downloadable document to support parents in identifying the expectations for
readers during their years at PHS:
