Thursday, October 29 - No school tomorrow! Have a long weekend.

Important Information:
A “Helping Hands” Parent Volunteer Information form went home today.  If you have both a Calgary Police Service security clearance and a CBE Volunteer form completed already, please fill it out and return it so that your child’s teacher knows you are able to volunteer in the classroom, during in-class programs, and/or field trips.

Highlights:
- We did the Grapheme Quiz
- We used “warm-coloured” paper, in the colours of red, orange, and yellow to trace pumpkins and wrote a number from 1-10 and showed a picture or tally representation of the number.  Then the pumpkins were hidden outside on the playground and we had to find the pumpkins and count how many numbers altogether we added up on the pumpkins.

-- Ms. Mui’s class: We did “Read to Self”.  We did “Work on Writing” and wrote about what we are going to be dressed up as for Halloween.  We invited Mrs. Zaharichuk, our school Technology Learning Leader, to teach us how to log-in to our school laptops, log-in to Raz-Kids to read a book, log-out, and shutdown the laptop.  Now we will know how to log-in to our laptops independently during “Listen to Reading” when we move into our Daily 5 rotations.

-- Mrs. Daniels’ class: In Daily 5, we rotated into “Read to Self”, “Read to Someone”, “Work on Writing”, “Word Work”, and/or “Listen to Reading”.  We did Math daily 3.  In Social Studies “Getting to Know You”, we interviewed Ethan.

- No Homework!
(Please refer to the grapheme sounds/spelling rules on the youtube “Graphemes with Gestures” Video on the right-hand side of this Gr. 1 blog.)

-Review the double graphemes: er, ir, ur, wor, ear, sh, ee, th, ay, ai, ow, ou, aw, au, ew, ui, oy, oi, oo, ch, ng, ea, ar, ck, ed, or, wh, oa

-Review the learning of the “er”, “ir”, “ur”, “wor”, “ear” grapheme sounds by playing this song on youtube to remember the sounds to particular words: “Her first nurse works early”.  Please play this song at home, to help your child remember the grapheme spellings as well:

-Home-Reading – Please have your child read around 15 minutes every night.  If we run out of other titles of the Level A white paper books your child is currently reading for home-reading, please log your child onto his/her kidsa-z.com reading account to find other titles in Level A that he/she hasn’t read yet.  Then write down the title of that book onto your child’s “Reading Log”.  Your child will read 1 book a night.

-Kidsa-z.com Reading – Besides reading the at-home white readers that are going home every day, you may also log on to “Raz-Kids”, using the kidsa-z.com website.  The login information is taped on your child’s purple folder.  The password is the picture cue.
Mrs. Daniel’s class - the account information is still under her maiden name: “sbeechey”.
Ms. Mui’s class – the account is under her username: “grmui”

Ask me about:
- What topic I wrote about in “Work on Writing”
