to 2 guests
to watch the afternoon or evening concert, as we do not have extra chairs for
extra bodies. A videographer
will be video-recording the whole performance during the 1:30-2:30
pm concert (when all students are present) and will be selling the Winter
Concert DVD for an
affordable and cheap price of $10! No picture-taking or
video-recording unless you crouch down/kneel at the side/front “Paparazzi
Corner”, so that all audience members have a clean view of the concert
performances. Thank you for understanding.
Winter Concert song video students can practice at home:
Mrs.
Mann, the Music teacher, posted a practice video for the song sung by all Grade
One and Grade Two students on the PHS Music blog: http://panoramahillsmusic.blogspot.ca
(Please copy and paste this Winter Concert Song
into the url bar, to view the video.)
Please
provide time for your child to practice singing and doing the actions at home
before the Winter Concert this Wednesday, Dec. 9 at the 1:30 pm and 6:30 pm
performances.
The Alex
“Warm Toes Without Holes”
(last day
to bring stuffed Socks in: Monday, Dec. 14)
The virtue of December is
“Service”, where are are learning that service means to help people in need,
whether it is helping to shovel an elderly person’s driveway, help carry
someone’s grocery bags to their car, donate food for the various food drives,
and to donate clothing.
The Alex is a community health
centre that welcomes homeless teenagers/youth and those who come from poor
family backgrounds, with little food and every necessities. As a school, we are encouraged to make socks,
stuffed with everyday essential toiletries, for these male and female
youth/teenagers, so that they can go about their every day being able to use
these items. To make your sock, buy a
long, warm pair of male or female sock (or both), roll up one of the socks and
put it into the bottom of the other sock, and stuff it inside with these items:
toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, soap, body lotion, shaver, shaving
cream, mittens, hand sanitizer, bus tickets to travel about the city,
McDonalds/Tim Hortons gift cards for food, etc.). The youth/teenagers who frequently visit The
Alex will be happy to receive these as their Christmas gifts. àPlease tie up your Male or Female stuffed
sock with ribbon, and label the Male or Female sock “Male” or “Female”, so The
Alex will know who the sock will be given to as a Christmas present, to keep
their feet warm this winter.
Mayor’s
Food Drive
-Thursday, December 17 – Last day to bring in Non-perishable food items (e.g.
canned food, soup, uncooked pasta, etc.) for the Mayor’s Food Drive, for
families who do not have enough to eat during this Christmas holiday
Tell and Show – Letter A written and oral sharing this week
Grade 1 students in Ms. Mui and Mrs. Daniels’
classes is starting Tell and Show
sharings this week. Students will be
doing their Tell and Show oral sharing on their Library day.
Parents, students are in Grade 1 and we ask that
they learn to independently write the sentence clues and sound out the clues to
their spellings. They cannot copy down the
words from an adult’s. Instead, guide
them how to sound out the letter sounds in their writing, and allow them to
write their own beginning, middle, and end sounds in their writing, using
finger spaces between each word, an upper case letter at the front of the
sentence, and a period at the end of the sentence.
Each week we will focus on one letter of the
alphabet for our tell and show. They
select an object that starts with the letter of the week, draw the object,
write 3 clues (3 sentences) that describe the object, orally present the clues
to the class, and may also bring in the item (if they choose). Please practice the oral sharing with your
child, so that they have rehearsed their 3 sentence clues before coming to
class on their Tell and Show day (Library day).
Highlights:
Parents, please review the Word Study Quiz your child did on
Friday. Your child will continue to
bring in their blue Homework books to school every day prior to Christmas
Break. We are putting Spelling words on
a hold until after Christmas break. All
Grade 1 classes will learn new spelling words when we resume school in January,
after Christmas break. From now until
Christmas break, the students will need their blue Homework books in class to
review all the graphemes, so that we can master them for more challenging words
in the new year.
Today we did our morning math word problem of the day. We heard the Monday (Library Day) students
share their letter A “Tell and Show” sharings.
We went to Gym today and played volleyball (volleying a beach ball over
the net). In the afternoon, we got a visit from the
Humane Society. A guest speaker from the
Humane Society explained to us what the organization does—they help take in
animals that have no homes, are unsafe, have been hurt, or are in bad
situations, and prepare those animals for happy, safe families to take care of
them in the future so that those animals are healthy, happy, and feel safe. The Humane Society sees 7000-10,000 animals
every year (around 1500 dogs, 5000 cats, and 1000 other critters per year (e.g.
birds, rabbits, snakes, turtles, iguanas, etc.). The Human Society guest speaker also shared
pictures of what emotions dogs and cats have (e.g. happy, sad, scared, angry,
calm), and what their ears, tails, eyes, and postures will look like. She also taught us what are wild dogs and
what are domestic dogs, as well as dogs that have been trained to be “Working
Dogs”, such as Guide dogs (e.g. to help those who are blind or visually
impaired), Companion dogs (help people out if they are lonely or sick at the
hospital), Police Dogs and SAR (“Search and Rescue) dogs. We learned many interesting facts about dogs
and cats from the Humane Society presentation today!
Ms.
Mui’s class: Our Reading Buddies helped us map out different locations in
our School Map this morning by going on a school tour with us. We found out where the Gr. 1 doors, our
classroom, Mrs. Daniels’ classroom, school’s front entrance doors, office,
Learning Commons, Gym, and Music rooms were on the School Map.
Mrs.
Daniel’s class: We did a writing piece independently on our own, from
looking at a picture that is related to the virtue of this month, “Service”
(helping out people, giving items to others who are in need of them). We went to Music today.
Homework:
- No Spelling homework until the new year. Temporarily we will be reviewing graphemes
until Christmas break. Before the end of
Christmas Break, we will have a final quiz of the graphemes learned this
year. If your child needs more practice
catching up on the grapheme sounds, review the single and double grapheme
sounds over Christmas break, to prepare them for more challenging Spelling
words in the new year.
- Tell and Show – Letter A written and oral sharings for
tomorrow (if your Library day is tomorrow).
Below is the link to the review videos for Word Study List #5:
(Please copy and paste this spelling review video

reading the at-home white readers that are going home every day, you may also
log on to “Raz-Kids”, using the kidsa-z.com website. The login
