Important information:

Winter Concert DVD for $10.00
A blue form went home today, regarding the ordering of a Winter Concert DVD that can be purchased for $10.00 (cash only).  A videographer recorded the whole 1 hour-long concert yesterday in the afternoon (1:30-2:30 pm) when all the students were present.  As the Grade 1 and 2 students haven’t had the opportunity to watch the whole Winter Concert production themselves (they were only able to watch Ms. Mui and Mrs. Daniels’ classes’ practices) as they were backstage during the rest of the concert duration, it would be a valuable keepsake to purchase a DVD for your family to enjoy during the winter break and for many years to come.  The DVD order form and $10.00 cash payment (please place in envelope) is due next Monday, December 14, 2015 to the videographer.

The Alex “Warm Toes Without Holes”
(last day to bring stuffed Socks in: Monday, Dec. 14)
The virtue of December is “Service”, where are are learning that service means to help people in need, whether it is helping to shovel an elderly person’s driveway, help carry someone’s grocery bags to their car, donate food for the various food drives, and to donate clothing.

The Alex is a community health centre that welcomes homeless teenagers/youth and those who come from poor family backgrounds, with little food and every necessities.  As a school, we are encouraged to make socks, stuffed with everyday essential toiletries, for these male and female youth/teenagers, so that they can go about their every day being able to use these items.  To make your sock, buy a long, warm pair of male or female sock (or both), roll up one of the socks and put it into the bottom of the other sock, and stuff it inside with these items: toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, soap, body lotion, shaver, shaving cream, mittens, hand sanitizer, bus tickets to travel about the city, McDonalds/Tim Hortons gift cards for food, etc.).  The youth/teenagers who frequently visit The Alex will be happy to receive these as their Christmas gifts.  àPlease tie up your Male or Female stuffed sock with ribbon, and label the Male or Female sock “Male” or “Female”, so The Alex will know who the sock will be given to as a Christmas present, to keep their feet warm this winter.

Mayor’s Food Drive
-Thursday, December 17 – Last day to bring in Non-perishable food items (e.g. canned food, soup, uncooked pasta, etc.) for the Mayor’s Food Drive that CBE and the Food Bank have partnered together, to provide food for families who do not have enough to eat during this Christmas holiday/winter season.

Tell and Show – Letter A written and oral sharing this week
Grade 1 students in Ms. Mui and Mrs. Daniels’ classes is  starting Tell and Show sharings this week.  Students will be doing their Tell and Show oral sharing on their Library day.

Parents, students are in Grade 1 and we ask that they learn to independently write the sentence clues and sound out the clues to their spellings.  They cannot copy down the words from an adult’s.  Instead, guide them how to sound out the letter sounds in their writing, and allow them to write their own beginning, middle, and end sounds in their writing, using finger spaces between each word, an upper case letter at the front of the sentence, and a period at the end of the sentence.

Each week we will focus on one letter of the alphabet for our tell and show.  They select an object that starts with the letter of the week, draw the object, write 3 clues (3 sentences) that describe the object, orally present the clues to the class, and may also bring in the item (if they choose).  Please practice the oral sharing with your child, so that they have rehearsed their 3 sentence clues before coming to class on their Tell and Show day (Library day).

Highlights:
Great job, Grade ones, on your amazing singing and instrumental performances yesterday for the two Winter Concerts!  Bravo!  You showed the whole school, all the families, and teachers what you have learned in math, and all of you shone like stars.  Great job to all the hard work you put into your practices during Music classes and at home.  You made your teachers, parents, families, and the whole school very proud.  Many people praised your performances yesterday.  Way to go!

We did our morning math word problem of the day independently.  The students whose Library Day was today got to share their 3 sentence clues for Letter A during Tell and Show.  We reviewed grapheme sounds.  We did a writing piece independently on our own, from looking at a picture that is related to winter with children playing in the snow.  We did Daily 5 rotations this morning.  We had Gym this afternoon.

Ms. Mui’s class: Ms. Mui was away today, so our guest teacher today was Mrs. Dobler.  We sorted by the attribute “Temperature” and our sorting rule today was sorting temperature by “Hot” and “Cold”.  We learned more about Translucent and Opaque and what examples are translucent and opaque.  We had Music this afternoon with Mrs. Mann.  We found more coloured objects from flyers and newspapers, to fill up our coloured paper for our “I Spy” Colour Class Book.  Ask me what colour I am working on, so that I can fill up the page with objects and things of that colour.

Mrs. Daniel’s class: Our Reading Buddies helped us map out different locations in our School Map today by going on a school tour with us.  We found out where the Gr. 1 exit doors, our classroom, Ms. Mui’s classroom, the school’s front entrance doors, office, Learning Commons, Gym, and the Music room are on the School Map.

Homework:
- No Spelling homework until the new year.  Temporarily we will be reviewing graphemes until Christmas break.  Before the end of Christmas Break, we will have a final quiz of the graphemes learned this year.  If your child needs more practice catching up on the grapheme sounds, review the single and double grapheme sounds over Christmas break, to prepare them for more challenging grapheme sounds (3-letter graphemes) and Spelling words in the new year.
- Tell and Show – Letter A written and oral sharings for tomorrow (if your Library day is tomorrow).

-What was my favourite part about performing on stage yesterday at both Winter Concerts?
-How did I feel when I was performing at the Winter Concerts?

Examples of Transparent: window, clear plastic water bottle, glass cup/jar, Ziploc bag, tape, eye glass lens, clear plastic, plastic container, magnifying glass, fish tank, an aquarium

Examples of Translucent: wax paper, a piece of notebook paper, frosted window, tinted glass, a glass jar/clear plastic water bottle with green food colouring water in it, a plastic container/bowl that isn’t completely see-through (the object is not very see-through--you cannot see your hand through these objects clearly; you can only see your hand’s shadow from behind)

What is Opaque?  Letting none of the light pass through an object (the object is not see-through).
Examples of Opaque: door, wall, brick wall, wooden desk, white board, Smart Board, iPad, cell phone, laptop, eraser, pencil, pencil sharpener, crayon, pencil crayon, pencil case, bucket, chair, table, drum, book, meter stick, coins, wallet, ball, chocolate bar, bag of chips, bath tub, sink, etc.
