Highlights:
Today was our last day working
together with Ms. Bain to learn about what it means to be a good reader. We practiced visualizing as Ms. Bain read us
a book called, ‘Big Red Barn’, by Margaret Wise Brown. This helps us become better readers because
sometimes there may be words we don’t understand when we are reading, but we
can gain clues from the context of the other words. We ask ourselves, “What makes sense here? Do
my words match the picture?”
Did you know that April 22nd
is Earth Day around the world? At PHS,
we are celebrating this important day today!
While we should think about our world every day, today was extra
special! Justin Warsylewicz
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Warsylewicz,
an Olympic silver medalist, share some important ideas regarding air
pollution. In class we thought of
different ways that WE can make a difference.
Remember, even though we are small, we can make a huge impact on the
world!
· Turn off the lights
· Ride your bike
to school
· Use a cup when
you’re brushing your teeth
· Help pick up
litter
· Reduce, reuse
and recycle!
Homework:
Literacy
M.A.P. – It’s the l-o-n-g weekend, take a break!
Tell
and Show: After a restful and restorative long weekend, we are ready for some robust and rich clues!
Dream Box: Dreambox is an interactive math program that the students have been
working on here at school. We encourage
the students to log in at home and practice developing their problem solving
skills. Teachers are able to track their progress and see what areas they are
excelling in or that may need improvement. Here is the link: https://play.dreambox.com/login/dq8q/panoramahs
Home Reading – Please
have your child read around 20 minutes every night. Don’t
forget to engage your child by talking to them about the text. Being a good reader is more than just
knowing the words!! Good readers
will: make connections, ask and answer questions, visualize the text, make
inferences and transform their thinking.
Alternatives to Traditional Reading – Part of
being a good reader is understanding how
to tell a story! Sometimes listening to a good book is just as
educational as reading a good book.
Please check out the links below for alternatives for those days where you’d
like to a change of pace.
