Tuesday, April 26th, 2016

Highlights:
After a l-o-n-g weekend away from our gladiolus bulbs, our classes noticed something very interesting… there is now a long, triangular shaped sprout!  We will be recording our observations in a special booklet and graphing the growth as our sprouts grow and change.

This is the last week our Grade One classes get to learn math with Mr. Kinsman.  Today we practiced our subtracting skills by “Racing to Zero”!  Everyone had a partner, a 100’s chart and a dice.  Our job was to start at 100, roll a dice and subtract the number from our total.  We would keep repeating this process until someone reached 0!  Tomorrow we are going to put our mathematical skills to the test and help Mr. Kinsman solve a real life problem!

Homework:
Literacy M.A.P. – Word Study List # 19
Tuesday: surprise, hate, coat, shoes
Wednesday: box, boxes, wish, wishes
Thursday: sing, together, heard, thank
Friday: Quiz!

Tell and Show: It has been a rainy and restless last few days.  Let restore our energy by being responsible and thinking up for clues for random letter “r”!

Dream Box: Dreambox is an interactive math program that the students have been working on here at school.  We encourage the students to log in at home and practice developing their problem solving skills. Teachers are able to track their progress and see what areas they are excelling in or that may need improvement. Here is the link: https://play.dreambox.com/login/dq8q/panoramahs

Home Reading – Please have your child read around 20 minutes every night.  Don’t forget to engage your child by talking to them about the text.  Being a good reader is more than just knowing the words!!  Good readers will: make connections, ask and answer questions, visualize the text, make inferences and transform their thinking.

Alternatives to Traditional Reading – Part of being a good reader is understanding how to tell a story!  Sometimes listening to a good book is just as educational as reading a good book. Please check out the links below for alternatives for those days where you’d like to a change of pace.
