Highlights:
Our conversation about “what makes a
good reader” continued today with Ms. Bain.
All good readers make connections, ask questions, visualize, infer and
transform their thinking. We got to hear
a great book called, “Knuffle Bunny” by Mo Williams (the same author who wrote
the Pigeon books). As we heard this
story, Ms. Bain demonstrated the connections her brain made as she read the
book. Tomorrow our classes will get a
chance to make their own connections.
It was Day #2 of the building
challenge. Students were asked to use a
specific material to create a structure that could support three or more
paperback books. What did we
discover? Interlocking materials made
the structures more stable. We also
learned that different materials work better for different structures. Last time the 100 flats were difficult to
work with when maing a structure that spanned across a chair, but were very
easy to work with when creating a support structure. We learned that the amount of materials
mattered as well. One group used rulers
to create an interwoven structure, but ran out of materials. Hmmm… that means we should bring a VARIETY of
MANY materials for our “beautiful things” project!
